Ballistic protection is not only used by law enforcement, but also for hunters, military and other individuals who utilize the services of self defense firearms. In order to be categorized as one who uses firearms for protection or defense, one must use heavy duty garments that are classified as “hard armor” or as “soft armor”. The two types of body armor are; soft armor which is used for ballistic protection, and hard armor that is used by law enforcement officers and military personnel. There are different kinds of ballistic protection such as bullet proof vests, bullet resistant body armors, and soft armor that stops shooting projectiles such as pellets and solid shot firearms, high velocity rifles, shotguns and handguns.
There are different materials that are used in the manufacturing of soft armor such as, thermoplastic polyimide, high impact polyimide, and rubberized nylon. The main purpose of this hard armor is to stop handguns, shotguns, high velocity rifles and other firearms. Although they are very effective, there are certain drawbacks such as the breaking of the pistol grips and breaking of the rifle sights when the protective shields are not fastened properly. For instance, it can be quite difficult for the user to quickly draw a gun while wearing high impact polyimide protective vest because the device will get pressed down during the drawn phase.
The most common type of hard armor found in ballistic vests and bullet proof vests is the para-aramid coating. This hard armor is commonly known as “brown vest” because it is mostly worn in training situations, often times at gun shows and exhibits because of its efficiency in stopping high velocity firearms. It is also widely used in protection of personnel in hazardous environments because it provides greater impact resistance against cutting, crushing and bursting. Another advantage of para-aramid coating is that it increases temperature resistance up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
